Actress Margot Robbie has commented on the possibility of returning to play Harley Quinn in another DC project, and it seems unlikely. Lady Gaga plays the character in this year’s Joker: Folie à Deux, and it’s always been Robbie’s dream to be able to pass the role on to another actor.
“I always wanted Harley to be a character that could be passed on to other actresses to play, as there are so many iconic male characters. That was always her dream,” Robbie said. Variety. “Harley is so much fun and she can go so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”
Robbie played Harley Quinn in the films Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad. As mentioned, Lady Gaga is taking on the role of this year’s Joker sequel, which opens in October. The sequel will reportedly use Lady Gaga’s musical talents, but the film isn’t expected to be a full-on musical.
Also in this interview, Robbie mentioned the possibility of another Barbie movie. With Barbie grossing over $1.4 billion and being the biggest movie of 2023 overall, people naturally wondered if there would be a sequel. Robbie said it was a “kneejerk reaction” to ask about the sequel. “It wasn’t designed for a trilogy,” he added.
One of Robbie’s next big projects is the untitled Ocean’s 11 prequel, in which he and Ryan Gosling reteam from Barbie to play parents Danny and Debbie Ocean in a film set in the 1960s.
