2023 was another good year for fans of shooty-shooty-bang-bang video games. while The golden age of shooters may be waning As the year comes to an end, we’ve still received some great stuff over the past 12 months, both in the first-person and third-person genres.
This Modern Warfare 3 gameplay has a weak Spices Up campaign
As before, this list is divided into two parts. First, we look at the fantastic new revolvers that arrived this year. Next, we’ll look at some older shooters that have continued updates and support in 2023. Let’s get started!

El Paso, elsewhere
I feel like I’ve sung this game’s praises a bit at the end of 2023, but I’m happy to do it once more. El Paso, elsewhere is a third person shooter game that is similar to playing a fan port Max Payne On PS1 modded with weird monsters and creeping angels. In other words: it’s really good and one of my favorite games of 2023.
final
In recent years, I’ve lost interest in most online shooters because they seem to focus too much on realism or battle royale/extraction gameplay. final It was a nice, refreshing reminder that fun, colorful, destructive first-person action still works these days, even if there’s no escape ring or 99 players to take out. I especially enjoyed the theme of the game show, which presents the money-grabbing gameplay as a whimsical broadcast that I might watch in a few years.
Warhammer 40k: Boltgun
Boomer shooters. Retro FPSs, whatever you prefer to call these throwbacks, have become a popular subgenre of video games. And one of my favorites was 2023 Warhammer 40k: Boltgun. I am not a big person W40k Boy, but I can’t deny that the pixelated battles and chainsaw murders are in Gun bolt There’s an explosion, oh, and a shotgun in this game *chef kiss emoji.* In years past this would have been on my top 10 list, but 2023 was just too stacked.
dispersion
When it first caught my eye dispersion Via a random Reddit post, I couldn’t get over to Steam fast enough to download it – and boy was I not disappointed. Not only this game to deliver a certain killing zone-Meeting-A soul in a shell Aesthetic Which I just love to death, but also Combines wall running with bullet time In an incredibly satisfying way
I swallowed happily dispersion In Steam Deck, it blew me away not only with the gravity-defying and time-consuming challenges it threw at me, but it was a fantastic reminder of how amazing a straight-up, linear shooter experience can be when it focuses on delivering intense action. Its gorgeous retro-styled environments with graphics remind you of a simpler time when you could lose yourself for a few hours in front of an engaging shooter, and then, after you’ve beaten it, feel that itch to Go back and try it again. harder difficulty – Claire Jackson
Remainder II
I liked the first one left over game, but crashed and never finished it, so I wasn’t sure if I’d get a sequel. But I’m glad I checked it out this year. Remainder II It plays very much like the first game – with a great mix of gritty third-person combat, responsive gunplay, and Dark soul– like progress – but everything feels, looks and sounds better.
It reminds me of the first one killers of faith And the sequel to that first game was fine, but in retrospect, it felt like a prototype for a sequel. I am excited to play more Remainder II And any future entries in this series.
Battlebit Remastered
It might look like something robloxbut Battlebit Remastered It is one of the best Battleground games from 2023, even if they aren’t officially part of that franchise. Like EA Battleground, Battle Beat A first-person military shooter built around large maps, large player counts, and wild action.
But while Battleground It has tried to be everything to everyone and has lost focus on delivering solid FPS combat and chaos. Battle Beat It’s here to take the reins and deliver a low-res spin on the gruesome but simple battle that spawned it Battleground The games that day were very good
Trepang 2
the first the fear It was cool. The rest… well, that first game was great anyway. Trepang 2 It is very similar the fearIt has smart AI, heavy weapons that look dangerous, and lots of casual spaces to solve bullet holes. But thanks to a decade-plus of evolution, Trepang 2 It looks faster, faster, and more engaging while offering an incredible FPS that makes you feel (I think) what John Wick feels like during his cinematic shootouts.

Infinite halo
It will never be 2007 again, but at least Infinite halo Finally, in 2023, it has reached a reliable and versatile status. Infinite It certainly impressed early on with its tight gameplay, but multiplayer always felt lacking in maps and variety. That’s no longer the case, as the game continues to receive healthy updates that make it worthy of getting your friends together. halo Once again at night
He just didn’t give it this year halo However, there are more maps and modes. The inclusion of Forge AI means you can regularly find small experimental mini-campaigns in the custom game browser or just Jump into the excitement of Firefight. And if you fancy yourself a competitive player, the inclusion of the Bandit Evo in the game’s latest update provides an accurate and satisfying alternative to the Battle Rifle, and I think it brings the mouse and keyboard a bit closer with its semi-auto one-shot. firing mode
Infinite halo It’s healthier than ever, and the future looks surprisingly bright for this classic series.
The second earthquake
wait for a minute, The second earthquake Is Really Why is the old one here? Well, it’s because of the creators’ sci-fi FPS Doom Got a fantasy remake in 2023 and it’s awesome. Seriously, if you’ve never played The second earthquake–-that the game probably launched in 1997 – and you have an Xbox and Game Pass subscription, grab this new version and enjoy. Fast Battle is still going strong in 2023.
Additionally, this new port comes with online cross-play and a massive mission pack including new content developed by MachineGames. What a great way to experience (or replay) a classic id shooter.
Fortnite
Maybe it’s the last year Fortnite This makes the list beautiful, not because the game is getting worse, but because Epic is expanding it more and more. I played more this year Fortnite From what I’ve played so far, I haven’t spent much time on the battle royale action that the game is known for. Instead, I’ve spent many hours over the past few weeks Lego fortnite, racket racingAnd Fortnite Festival called Rock band But on a controller they’re all fun, but they’re not shooters.
main reason Fortnite Staying on this list is because Epic continues to tweak and improve the game’s core battle royale modes with each update, frequently adding more parkour and weapon options. So it’s still a damn good shooter in 2023. But it gets so much more that it feels increasingly odd to put it here as if it weren’t a giant sandbox full of other games.
My House.wad / Infinite Doom
It is interesting that 30 years after its publication, Doom And the sequel is still receiving new content developed by the community. Even more impressive, the content is incredible and delivers truly memorable experiences that are comparable to new games coming out in 2023. And people say old dogs can’t learn new tricks.
MyHouse.wad, For example, it might be the best horror game of the year. And this is one Doom II Good map, it’s much more than that, with its many secrets and hideous hidden areas. But I don’t want to spoil too much. Instead, shop around Doom II Go to Steam and play MyHouse.wad. (Or if you’re too scared, you can read more about it here.)
It was also released this year infinite torment, A rebellious fashion for Doom II which uses the original levels as its base, but layers on new weapons, randomly generated loot, magic, and modified enemies to deliver a shooter experience that’s all – not just Doom Vets – will enjoy. But if you have played a lot Doom And Doom II, Infinite It’s a great way to revisit the game and experience it in a whole new way.
