The first version of Mickey Mouse is now in public domain as of January 1st, 2024, and as many have guessed, a game developer has announced its take on the character in a horror setting.
Nightmare Forge Games has announced Infestation 88, a 1-4 player episodic horror game set in 1988. You play as an exterminator called in to rid houses of “twisted versions of classic characters and urban legends.” And yes, Mickey Mouse is one of those characters. The game is slated to release on Steam later this year as an Early Access title.
The version of Mickey Mouse that entered the public domain today, January 1st, marks the first appearance of the character dating back to 1928’s Steamboat Willie. Newer versions of the character are still under Disney’s control. Legal experts expect Disney to fiercely protect its brand, and Mickey Mouse in particular, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming days, weeks and months as more and more Mickey-related projects inevitably come to light. Steamboat Willie’s public ownership status.
Infestation 88 features a number of “unique locations” and players visit these locations to discover the secrets (and horrors) of how each infestation began. “Find the source at all costs,” reads part of the game’s description. Each area has its own unique “classic character” or urban legend to deal with. Mickey Mouse is one of these. You can see some more in the trailer and image gallery in this story.
Infestation 88 features private and public lobbies, as well as proximity-based and standard voice chat, so teams can work together to destroy the evil creatures. Items are randomized, which Nightmare Forge says should help increase the game’s replayability. As players progress through Infestation 88, they unlock experience, skins, perks, and more. In addition, the game supports Nvidia DLSS, which Nightmare Forge says should deliver “stunning visuals without frame rate drops.”
